Getting Started with Business Process Management (BPM)

After deciding that BPM holds real value for organizations, process owners and business managers are faced with the challenge of deciding how to get started with an actual BPM project. The first step is to evaluate current processes and identify major characteristics. Forrester Research identifies two major types of processes: Human-centric processes and system-centric processes. Of course, the most complex processes will be those that are both human and system centric. Human-centric processes are those that predominantly deal with routing of work from one individual to another and support how each person will interact with that piece of work. This type of process does not generally incorporate many systems into the work flow. In system-centric processes there is little human involvement, many transactions, and few exceptions. Most people will look at the two categories and note that their processes fall somewhere in the middle. Business users should establish baseline requirements based on the nature of their processes. When human-centric processes and system-intensive processes are both present in an organization, business users and IT must work together to ensure that whatever BPM suite is selected provides sufficient support for the activities that they wish to be able to accomplish. Then, together, quantitative models can be applied to determine priorities and select the best suite.

  • SharePoint BPM Integration for document repository and records management system

    GoTech specializes in integrating any of the above BPM and Case Management systems with SharePoint as a back-end document repository and records management system. One of our more recent successfully completed projects involved using Appian as the front-end system for forms, workflows, business logic and rules and automatically routing the procurement and contract documents to the appropriate library or list, and ultimately to the records center. The SharePoint records center would then apply records rules based upon a matrix to keep the record for the appropriate time before final disposition or make it a permanent record. In addition, we can route your SharePoint documents to any existing records management system through RESTful web services and Application Programming Interfaces (API's).

U.S. Commodity Futures Trade Commission
Business Process Management Solution
One of GoTech Global’s latest projects for the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) included architecting and leading three Teams to build an external partner portal in the Cloud that interfaced with their internal environment and over 4,000 global financial institutions. As part of an ongoing effort to maintain and modernize its IT environment CFTC decided to automate several paper based manual processes with automated Business Process software solutions. All of these manual processes involved public commodity and future market participants filling out paper forms monthly, quarterly and annually. After the forms were filled out, a large contingent of Federal employees would manually type the information into 1 or more of the 8 different disparate data systems that CFTC utilizes. None of these systems shared data and CFTC had no way to measure performance metrics. CFTC evaluated several third party consulting companies, before ultimately selecting GoTech Global to lead the project.
